Had Breakfast with Amy Ulen and Kate Neal This Morning

July 12, 2025

I has breakfast with Amy Ulen and her niece Kate Neal this morning.

As it turns out, Kate knows significantly more than I do about Costa Rica. In fact, she has been planning to move there since 2013 and is in the process of having her home built on the Caribbean coast. She’s a digital nomad, so she has the income to move and she plans to open a business and hire Ticos when she gets down there.  All of which is awesome.

When people fly in to stay with Kate, they will be flying into the airport near where I’ll be (at least until the airport in her neck of the woods becomes CR’s third international flight hub), so I’ve invited her to crash at my place (along with her visitors) before they head back to the beach, which is a several-hours-long trip. She readily took me up on the offer. And she wants to meet the Villas Escondidas folks; her business will be kindred, but not competitive.

Amy took a picture of all of us, so when I get it, I will post it here:

REFRESHING YOUR MEMORY

If you watched Hannah McCrane’s and my podcast Ever New while we offered it (for almost two years) you’ve already met Amy virtually.  (You still can by clicking on the link!) Amy and I met as the result of a mutual interest in Star Trek. She appeared in STAR TREK: OF GODS AND MEN as the Vulcan teacher and in ENTERPRISE.  Not huge parts, but hey, I’d have given my eyeteeth to appear as a finger in any of the series or motion pictures!  LOL!

Amy has been deeply involved in the Star Trek world for decades now. But far more importantly, she’s a delightful person. You can tell by looking, can’t you?

Obviously, this image isn’t what it suggests! LOL!

TACOMA PRIDE FESTIVAL

After departing from Amy and Kate, I drove to Wright Park with every intention of enjoying the Pride Festival. Alas, there was nowhere to park nearby that I would be able to know how to get back to, so after trying to find a spot for more than 30 minutes, I gave up the quest and returned home.  I’m sad I couldn’t enjoy my last Tacoma Pride, but I will enjoy the NEXT Pride Festival in San Jose with my new Villa Escondidas amigos, and I’ll cover that one here for you.

I am delighted that Tacoma Pride is so well-attended this year that people have to park a half mile away to attend it. That’s fabulous!

EARLY MORNING CRITTER CARE

Because I knew I was having breakfast with Amy and Kate this morning, I did the critter sitting very early, starting at about 6:30.  Amy texted me while I was there suggesting 9:30 as the meeting time, so I said fine and then realized I still had plenty of time to invest in critter care.  So I emptied the kiddie-pool duck ponds (three of them) and refilled them with fresh water.  The ducks were soooo happy!   They jumped right in and started scooting around in them as though Disneyland had just appeared in their barnyard.  It was a delight to watch.

I think that’s all the news that’s fit to print for this time.  Have a great weekend!
