Back from Grecia Tire and Thrift Store Foray

November 5, 2026

It’s 1:23. I’m back from Grecia where Adilio got new tires and I got meds and household items.

Adilio dropped me at Clinica Sanchez ten minutes early, so I waited until Dr. Pacheco shepherded me into her office so we could talk about my test results and prescribe me an antibiotic to deal with the UTI.

After I did that, we headed into Central Grecia so I could pick up cash at the ATM and my drugs as the farmacia while Adilio took a side trip to fill a tire that was getting low on air.

By the time I finished up in the pharmacy, Adilio was back so we headed to the tire place to get him four new tires for his vehicle.  While we waited there (not long), he and I enjoyed half of the dark chocolate and coconut candy bar that I picked up at the pharmacy, thinking the tire routine was going to take a lot longer than it did.

After we finished up at the tire place, Adilio drove me to a small tienda in town that was touted as a thrift/discount store, dropped me off, and asked how long he should wait to pick me up again. I said, “No more than 15 minutes.”

I was done in ten.

I walked in, said hello to the proprietor in Spanish, let him know I didn’t speak great Spanish yet, but that I’m studying like mad. Told him I was looking for items to furnish my upcoming apartment, and he gestured to have a look around.  If I had questions, he insisted that I ask in Spanish (in a good-spirited way), and he corrected me when I messed up, which I appreciated immensely.  That said, he did understand everything I asked him, even though I fractured some sentences and tenses, so I’m getting there!

I came out of there with a brand new, boxed coffee pot, two colorful “matrimonial-sized” bedspreads, a lovely king size bed set that is masculine enough, and an elevated shoe rack (important here because of the occasional scorpion or other insect critters), all for under 20,000 colones (just under $45), all brand new:

They didn’t have a toaster and what they did have that I would absolutely need to furnish an apartment, I already have (blenders, fans, etc.) so my next stops (after I decide what else will be needed) will be Mundo Magico in Grecia and Pequeno Mundo in Alajuela.  I also will need to stop at the place in Grecia that Jon told me about to get some inversion-based pots and pans plus some kitchen utensils — spatula, strainer, etc. — and some bath towels and wash cloths.

I’ll be attending DEMS ABROAD on Tuesday

Kathy Neckar will get me there and back and will take the box of books that are destined for Blooms on the same day so I won’t have to schlep those down to the new place on December 1st.  Hurray!

Adilio is Very Happy with His New Set of Tires

He says his tires last about six months, as much as he drives.  I’m glad he’s on new ones again. I don’t like to think about any of my friends driving on balding tires!  Too dangerous and no one wants to be changing tires on any of the roads around here, for sure!

Am super glad I was able to bless him in this way. Jon is next, whenever he gives me the word. (He doesn’t drive anywhere near as much as Adilio.)

That’s  it for this update!  Short and sweet! Carry on!
