The Shift

November 3, 2023

I’m not sure what to attribute this to, but my mind has suddenly made The Shift into Super Creativity Mode.

I’ve been listening to NPR Radio for the past two or three months. It always has interviews with Creatives, past and present, which always excites me. That could be why I’ve shifted.

The dream I had last night played on that theme

I heard an interview some time ago with the fellow whose team finished the musical that Stephen Sondheim was working on when he passed away. During the interview, he said there was a middle part without any music written for it because it covered a period within the story that didn’t really lend itself to the kind of music one expects in a musical. (Apparently it was a heavy subject or unsettling subject.)

Or maybe I’m “pregnant” with a new book or about finishing the book I started last year. (Its creation ceased when I became obsessed and distressed by the continuing deteriorating conditions in our world!) That could be it, because during the interview with Angela Jossy yesterday she asked what my next book will be about, and that reminded me that I haven’t finished one I started, so I named that one!

Or maybe it’s just TIME to start anew!

Whatever it is, last night I had a lucid dream about being in a group of Creatives. We were meeting to discuss an as-yet-unfinished middle section of a musical that we were writing.  We had even gone so far as to do a live preview of a piece that appears toward the end of the musical on a college campus. It was absolutely stunning. People who were passing by simply had to stop to take it all in.  It was a truly mesmerizing performance, with young people doing acrobatics, uplifting music, sensational singing, and dancing to a stirring score.  I knew at that moment that we HAD to finish the musical, because it was absolutely destined to live forever in people’s hearts and minds.

WHO WILL REDEEM THE PROBLEMATIC PART OF THE SCRIPT??

After the preview at the campus, we were discussing who should tackle the problematic middle part for which lines had been written but they just weren’t working.  I was with another elderly Creative. We seemed to be the only elders in attendance, the the section that needed major help would require the attention and dedication of people who had lived and experienced life for more than a few decades. So, even though we knew it was a huge risk and that we might not succeed since the original playwright hadn’t, we looked at each other and silently nodded. At just about the same time, everyone looked toward us to see if we’d commit to tackling the task.

We agreed and a cheer went up

I spotted the producer or director leaving the campus just moments later and joined her to ask if I could get the problematic pages from her so we could look them over and determine quickly whether we were up to the task. She said, “You can get them tomorrow if you’ll meet me at ______ (some place on campus) between 4 and 5 a.m. That’s my only available time right now.”

I thought, “Wow!” as I was hoping I could get what I needed immediately, but I agreed, of course, saying “Okay,” and then told her I wasn’t familiar with this campus and asked where ______ was. I said, “If you have the address, I can google it.” She said she didn’t know the address but she knew the name of the Hall it was in and gave me that.

I thanked her and with that, the dream ended.

So, now I’m all hot to trot on something Creative that’s 100% my own (not a work for hire) and all I have started is the book, so I’m going to dedicate myself to doing that until it’s finished. I like what I have so far, even after not looking at it for over a year, and the topic is still timely, so that’s what I’ll be doing for the next few weeks.

Wish me luck and success!
