My Current Book Recommendations

April 3, 2026

I’ve been a bookworm my entire life. Here are my most recent book recommendations for those of you who still love discovering great books!

Titles:

This is Happiness

Judge Stone

I am about a third of the way into Time of the Child, too.

This is Happiness and Time of the Child are by the same author. (Robert Reich recommended these titles during the last SATURDAY COFFEE KLATCH.) They’re novels about individuals in a town in Ireland during the time when the country was becoming “electified.” It harkens back to the days when life was much harder but people seemed happier. The writing is  lyrical, the sentences long (but not overly complex), so it takes a little getting used to, but once you get into the swing of things, it’s quite enchanting.

Judge Stone is by Viola Davis and James Patterson and it is riveting. I couldn’t put it down, which is why I finished it in six hours. It would make a fabulous motion picture!

Walked 8,076 steps so far today

Walked 7,978 steps yesterday.  I’m back in the swing of things, walking every morning. I’ve missed it!

Got a message from Schwab Today

They want me to confirm my two addresses (my rental address in Costa Rica and my property/legal/passport/driver license address in Tacoma), which I have already done in the paperwork I sent them, so I responded saying that what I put in the documents is correct. Told ’em that I intend to keep all my assets in the U.S. even after I’m approved for pensionado status in the next six months or so.

Needless to say, I’m getting pretty impatient with this process of switching my IRA from where it is to them. That’s for sure. I’ve been at it for weeks. It’s rucking fidiculous that it should take an act of God to get it done!

Made Another Crockpot Soup that Blew Me Away

I came back from Grecia two days ago with a bunch of lettuce with amazing tops plus potatoes,  a soup mix, and apple nectar, so yesterday morning I concocted another crockpot of homemade soup, and really outdid myself this time.  I’m going to write down the recipe while I remember it so I can recreate it again.

Ingredients:

1 (or more) skinless, boneless chicken breasts

A bunch of cut up celery (6-8 stalks, including their leafy tops)

3 cups of water

1 package of chicken soup

2 or 3 cups of apple nectar (depending on how much you plan to make at one time)

3-4 small to medium size potatoes

1 or 2 cups of sweet corn

Seasoning to taste (I used Italian seasoning, tropical seasoning, and a little black pepper)

I think that’s everything I put in it.

I put the crockpot on high and cook everything except the corn on high for four to six hours (six hours if the chicken is frozen). I added the sweet corn about halfway through (if its frozen; an hour before the concoction is done if the corn is from a can or right off the cob).

I had way more celery than I thought I should use — not being a huge fan of celery — but as it turned out, it was just perfect. Cooking the celery does something magical to it.  It imbues the entire crockpot with a yummy flavor.

I put this soup over a bed of brown rice, then sprinkle some cheddar cheese on top and mix it all together.  It’s just sensational. I will probably make it once a week from now on.  I made enough for eight meals and froze some of it.

I could eat it every day and not ever get tired of it, I think!

Give it a try and let me know what you think!
