Starting last week, I turned over a new leaf. For every new client I serve, I’m going to send them a personalized Thank You card (yes, in the mail) to thank them for their trust.
We’ve been ruined by email. It’s just so easy to dash off a “thanks” and scarcely remember that we did so. But thank yous given via emails, although immediate, fast and heartfelt, are just as easily forgotten as they are given. We delete non-essential emails all the time. I know I do…
Last week I jotted thank you notes to the Aussie and UK clients that John Arraraf sent to me. One of the two just arrived today. Based on the response I got, you would have thought I’d sent this client a box of candy or a dozen roses–she was that surprised and tickled. She emailed me immediately, saying how much she loved getting a real letter from overseas! When I responded via email, saying I had no idea that my little note could make someone’s day, she responded back immediately, “I loved it!” Talk about underscoring one’s delight; there you have it!
This client is already very happy with the copy I’ve written for her but can you imagine what doing this one additional thing will do for our relationship? She will probably save the note close at hand in some way and keep my brochure at the ready in case another person needs a good copywriter!
Clients leave a lot because of perceived indifference. I wonder now how many I may have lost because I followed up “Great job! Thanks!” via email with “Happy to help–always!” and that was it except for an annual holiday newsletter.
Not any more. I expect this has taught me a lesson that I should have known a long time ago: “Out of sight–out of mind.” I get return clients, but I probably would have even more if I had just followed up with a personalized snail mail note of thanks to each of them.
I’m about to find out!
