Computers Confuse Me

August 9, 2025

Computers confuse me at times.

I had to ask my nephew to make this PC (and maybe my laptop?) translate Spanish to English automatically using Google Translate.

I would have preferred using Reverso to translate, but that was a bridge too far. Google translate can be pretty crappy at times.

But it is what it is — and at least I can read what I need to know to successfully navigate my upcoming appointments in CR on the 9th and 11th. Thankfully I have Jon Graham Mitchell to accompany me to both appointments so he can translate for me when the officials ask me questions or make comments. I’m not fluent enough to navigate a government agency solo, I don’t think.

The Computer Glitch

The problem (I guess!) was that I had recently made Duck Duck Go the default search engine on my PC, so translation wasn’t happening automatically anymore, as before.

I asked Phil to take DDG off and default me to Google. He did that and then he directed the PC to “always translate Spanish” which I had done at some point because it was happening on my GoFundMe page but nowhere else, apparently due to the relatively recent addition of Duck Duck Go.

Anyway, if that doesn’t make sense to you, you’re in the same boat I am.

I’ve never felt the need to know how to engineer a vehicle as long as I knew how to drive it. I feel the same way about computers. Just do the engineering and leave the googling and typing up to me!  What’s inside is all Greek to me. (It may read Intel Inside but it’s freakin’ mysterious to me!)  I have a 74 year old brain. It has its limits. I prefer to learn other things. So I’ll always be at the mercy of someone who understands how to put my PC through its paces.

I’m a bimbo in this regard.

I am never ashamed to freely admit what I don’t know.

When I ask for help, it feels brave, so I don’t do it as much as I probably should.  But I’m learning to ask for help! And I’ll undoubtedly get a lot of practice asking for help (ayuda) in Costa Rica until I learn the ropes there.
