The Writing Life — AI AI — OH!

January 20, 2024

Prospective clients are experimenting with AI now, so my opportunities for original sales and content writing work have plummeted. I know they’ll increase again as people find out that AI copy and content writing is a losing strategy, so I’m segueing to editing in the meantime, which doesn’t pay anywhere near what original writing does.

So, I’m counting pennies again until people discover that AI delivers soul-less copy and content, and that it sends their customers fleeing for the exits.

The project descriptions at Upwork and other freelance sites tell it all:

“ABSOLUTELY NO AI ALLOWED ON THIS WRITING PROJECT. I TRIED USING IT TO SAVE MONEY AND IT SUCKS!”

‘I HAVE AI DETECTION SOFTWARE. IF EVEN YOUR COVER LETTER IS AI-GENERATED, YOU WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED.”

And yet, there also scores of writing jobs at Upwork that read, “AI permitted but the results must be massaged to make sure all facts are correct and that it sounds like a real human being wrote it.”  We’ll see how long that trend lasts!  With these demands, they might as well post, “AI sucks, so use it sparingly and watch it like a hawk–and I will be watching YOU to be sure you don’t shoot me in the foot!”  Just what every business owner needs: another task that their hired writers should be doing without requiring AI detection software or becoming micromanagers!

  AI-CREATED PIECES                 VERSUS                HUMAN-CREATED PIECES

logic/facts/science/data   —-  creativity, passion, inspiration, joy!

Winner takes all (eventually!)

Humans organically incorporate rational thought into their copy and content.

AI cannot incorporate creative thought (or fact-checking, or ethics) into its copy and content, because it has no creative thoughts or ethics.

It serves honorable people and scoundrels alike.

No reputable copywriter does that.

We’re gatekeepers.

We won’t knowingly serve clients whose offerings are shoddy or whose ethics are questionable.

That’s another difference worth noting.

I need to jump off here now to take a meeting with a Canadian who wants his copy and content edited.  I may be back later with more on this, or not.

If there is nothing more, simply consider what’s already here.  Read it again.

The bottom line is don’t risk your business reputation using AI for your sales copy.
