Slept In, Walked Late, Tried the Plank Exercise Again

November 16, 2025

After falling back to sleep, I didn’t open my eyes again until 8:39. The sun was already up, so after eating a quick breakfast, I took nearly a quarter of my 7000 steps walk in bright sunshine. (Usually I walk before the sun reaches much of my walking path.)

About halfway through my walk, my neighbor Diane joined me for a lap. She had a handmade bracelet and some coins to give to a neighbor along our route (folks I hadn’t met yet) so she introduced them to me (Eileen and her husband). Now I believe I’m acquainted with nearly every resident who lives on Calle Esteban Salas. That feels like major progress.

Diane told me she had wanted to drive in to hear Paul play yesterday, too, but then it started to storm like mad, so she changed her mind at the last minute.  I told her I wish I had known because I thought Marilyn (who she knows) might have room in her  vehicle for her, too. (She would have, both ways, because Nancy rode back with her husband in their vehicle and Paul was on the passenger side in front.)

When I got back I took a shower because walking in sunshine so much worked me into a slight sweat, just enough to make me want to cool off and get clean again. (Wash off some of the bug spray.)

THE PLANK

I read a report last night stating that if a person over 65 can hold the plank position for 60 seconds, they are very strong and all their faculties (mind and body) are working in unison.

So I tried it

I hadn’t held a plank position in over a year so I figured I’d have to work up to 60 seconds again over a semi-short span of time, but I quickly discovered that I was able to hold the position without trembling for 45 seconds. I didn’t go any longer than that this time.  I do plan to do it every day, and to not exceed one minute each time.

The instructions were to start slow and do only 10 to 20 seconds the first time and slowly build up on subsequent days.  But 20 seconds felt like nothing for me, so I held the position for twice that long.

I was pretty darned surprised to discover that I’m still this strong after not having planked at all in nearly a year. I suppose mountain goat-level climbing and lots of walking has helped me achieve the task; I can’t think of any other explanation for it.

The report said that 70+ year olds who can do this have good strength, balance and body/mind coordination. So, I feel awfully darned good about it!

No new photos today.  Sorry about that. Forgot to get a selfie of Diane and me.  GRRR!  I’m not a natural photographer. Have to keep reminding myself to document my doings in images!
