Not My Circus Not My Monkeys: Politics in the USA

June 24, 2025

Someone asked me if I will continue to write political blog posts after I move to Costa Rica.

Absolutely Not!

Part of the reason I’m leaving the USA for Costa Rica is to escape the policies being put into place by the current administration.

Had the election gone the other way, I would have delayed my leavetaking for another two to three years, until my sister decides to sell this property.

But the way the election went, I am no longer safe here. My foreign friends — especially those in Germany, who know the history of fascism and authoritarian all too well — have been urging me to get out asap.

Given the current regime, no one is safe, especially no one who is brown or trans.  Many others aren’t safe, either — Black folks, women, other marginalized groups — but trans folks are right up there with brown people and international students, especially vocal so-called “enemies” with the balls to say it’s all wildly unconstitutionaly and anti-American to do what’s being done every damned day by the current regime.

Pura Vida = Pure Life

When I get to Costa Rica, I hope never to have to think, talk or write about current US politics ever again.

That will be one of the freedoms I’ll be claiming for myself down there.

Not my circus, not my monkeys.”

That said, I will retain my US citizenship (for the time being, at least) so I can vote in the midterm election next year, and perhaps in the general election in 2028.  After that, who knows? I may not even still be alive then! But at least until then I will be living pura vida and not stressing about having someone come to my door and arrest me for being a loudmouth human rights activist. .

It’s my duty as a patriot and USA citizen to call out unAmerican, anti-Constitutional activities whenever and wherever I see them for as long as I’m residing here.
