Because I was in Facebook jail for more than 24 hours, I didn’t get as many of the “thinking of you” messages on DeForest Kelley’s birthday until January 21st.
Thank you to everyone who reached out.
I’m sorry I wasn’t able to reach back to you unless I have
your WhatsApp info or some other method of communication.
The Good News is that I Didn’t Get Sad This Year
Usually I start getting the “thinking of you” messages several days before January 20th, so by the time it actually rolls around, I usually fall into “pity party” mode.
That didn’t happen this year, so I was able to celebrate his birthday without revisiting the reality that he is no longer with us physically. That was new for me. But I know it’s the way he would want to be remembered: with unmitigated joy and gratitude.

On January 20th (while in Facebook Jail). I wrote this out in longhand while listening to “the hopeful” section of Heather Cox Richardson’s live Facebook stream. I took notes:
(T-Wrecks’) terror campaign isn’t working on white people who have entered the arena to protest ICE’s unlawful detentions and extrajudicial killings. “Minnesota Nice” people are NOT complying. They’re doubling and tripling down against ICE.
We (the usually peaceable white folks and citizens) hold the keys to the kind of future the United States will have. We need to keep the pressure on. Relentlessly. Richardson suggests chipping away at T-Wrecks’ advisors, the unelected, appointed people who are actually running the country into the ground: Steven Miller, Russell Vought, RFK Jr., Pam Bondi, Kash Patel, and the rest of his ass-kissing Cabinet. They are vulnerable. Call your representatives and hammer them with the reality that these people are NOT serving your interests. Especially if you have GOP representatives, do this. They will listen to you. Let them know that they will get voted out of office if they don’t.
But don’t neglect to tell your DEM representatives, too. They tally calls and sentiments. They cannot tally silences. And you can bet they’re hearing plenty from the other side. They probably agree with your concerns, but they need to tally them for them to count. CALL THEM to say Thank You for continuing to stand against what’s happening right now.
Richardson says Prime Minister Carney’s speech today is especially important and she encourages everyone to listen to it. Above is the link. It’s less than 12 minutes long. And here is Richardson’s full explanation of what’s happening right now:
The entire world is stepping away from the United States — which (MY opinion and trepidation) is both SMART and SCARY
Scary because the value of the US dollar could plummet as foreign nations calls in the hundreds of billions in US debt, and if it does I won’t be able to afford to live anywhere other than manybe Vietnam. So, T-Wrecks is still the “undropped shoe” in my futire — in EVERYONE’S future. I can’t dwell on it too much because it upsets my stomach — and I left the US to settle my stomach financially.

6891 steps so far…
Ate one half cup of cereal, one piece of toast with peanut butter, and drank a cup of coffee. WOO HOO! I’ll have a cup of peach nectar a little bit later. Slept 7 3/4 hours last night.
Three weeks from now Lisa should be landing at SJO in Costa Rica
Adelio and I will be arriving between 9 and 9:30 to pick her up and bring her to my new abode in San Isidro. WOO HOO!
I need to give her (and Adelio) my SI address as soon as I have it. I also need to tell Lisa that her cellphone/WhatsApp won’t work until she gets a SIM card and that if she doesn’t see me at baggage claim that she should go outside and ask for an English-speaking assistant and give them my WhatsApp number so they call call me for her. That’s what I had to do when I arrived. The folks at SJO are very helpful (as they are everywhere in CR that I’ve been.)
I saw Diane briefly this morning
I love chatting with her. We We talked about our WORST teachers and school/peer experiences and about how long it took us to overcome the lasting effects that they seared into our fragile, still developing self-esteem at young ages.
I also talked about having mostly GOOD teachers who encouraged me and built up my self-respect. Unfortunately, Diane’s teachers were mostly downers for her. That was immensely sad to hear.
She is a wonderful human being
Whoever made her feel anything less than that has earned my enmity.
Some people should not be trusted with growing psyches
I strongly suspect that MOST of what’s wrong with people is the result of ham-handed non-empathetic, compassion-less caregivers and authoritarian mindsets. I’m not a trained psychologist, just a finely-tuned person, and I see and hear a lot of internalized pain within most of the people I know — ESPECIALLY those within and from the U.S. I don’t see that here among Ticos in Costa Rica. This culture is very different in a good/positive way.
That’s all for now. If I think of anything more, I’ll start a new post.
