I sent a message to VP Harris at WhiteHouse.gov to let her know I have an idea for next week’s Democratic Convention. I hope she (or someone else there who can take action) gets it in time.
Here’s my suggestion:
Have someone famous sing/play Helen Reddy’s song I AM WOMAN but change part of the last existing stanza to read (following “as I spread my loving arms across the land’)
“But I’m still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until more (or most) of my brothers understand…”
(instead of “Until I make my brothers understand, so it doesn’t come across exclusionary of feminist men, or in any way militant or reactionary)
And then add a couple stanzas:
We are women, watch us vote
And in the meantime, please take note:
We share values all across this mighty land
In places purple, blue and red,
We want our children to be fed,
Safely schooled and oh so wisely planned.
Optional additional stanza:
So, come join with us today
To help us finally have our say
To bring equity and justice to our shore.
We are many, have no fear,
We need to make it crystal clear
That we’re not going back
to former days of yore
When others ruled our lives
And we were forced into being wives
To buy a home, get credit cards, or thrive.
… or something along these lines to make extra stanzas contemporary and compelling.
