DeForest Kelley Westerns: I’m Resurrecting the Facebook Page

October 16, 2023

I’m resurrecting the DeForest Kelley Westerns Facebook page to redeem it from the rabbit hole it went down the past several years.

I deleted a great many of the most recent MCoy/Star Trek-related posts, and added about a dozen western-centric posts, so the page has come alive again. Lots of activity there now. Most of the active members are DE-leriously happy!

It was just  the boost it needed, I think… I’m adding a couple more administrators and have sent notes to existing admins to keep an eye out for non-western posts and spammy ads on the page.

There are literally scores of Star Trek and DeForest Kelley legacy pages on Facebook. As far as I know or can find, my DeForest Kelley Westerns page is unique and I want to keep it that way.

I added the below article that I wrote for Cowboys and Indians Magazine seven years ago.  I had to keep it under wraps and not republish it for two years following its publication; that was in the contract I signed, but that prohibition expired five years ago, so here it is again:

De Loved Doing Westerns

De was proudest of his westerns and of WHERE LOVE HAS GONE, although of course he was immensely fond of his Star Trek career and the millions of fans he gained as a result of his exposure as Dr. McCoy.  He was finally able (for the rest of his life) to keep a roof reliably over his and Carolyn’s heads for the first time in his career without scrambling for every opportunity he could find as a freelance (series-less) working actor. Carolyn was finally able to retire as a secretary-for-hire to become De’s manager and work from home. Star Trek was a major win for them — and for us, his fans!!!

But his heart and DNA were on terra firma, not in outer space (although some of his DNA is scheduled to go into deep space in December this year aboard the Celestis ENTERPRISE FLIGHT  thanks to yours truly). He loved western scenery, locations, and stories. He cried when he learned he would be awarded The Golden Boot for his body of work in westerns. (Alas, he didn’t live long enough to attend the award ceremony, so I went in his place and carried the award back to Carolyn in the hospital. But he did see and get to hold the award before it was engraved with his name on it.)

De DEserves a Westerns page. I’m gonna be sure he has one exclusively DEdicated to his RowDE Cowboy personas.

I wrote a Cowboy De limerick years ago that he loved, based on a true story, which he told many times from stages across the country.  Here it is:

Now, De was a cowboy with flair!

He rode side-by-side without care

‘Til one day, while dismountin’

He spurred the next mount and

Spent half of the scene in midair!

I wrote another limerick that was De/Carolyn/McCoy related:

It isn’t all a bad dream

I’m as stuck on you as I seem

If you had your druthers

You might prefer others

Or even the transporter beam!

Yeah, we had a lot of fun, the Kelleys and I did.

Those were the days, my friend…

I hope you will re-visit (or visit for the first time, if you’ve never been there before) my DeForest Kelley Westerns page on Facebook.  I hopeyou’ll contribute to it, too.  Write some cowboy limericks of your own!  Share De images as a cowboy. Talk about your favorite westerns in which De appeared.

Saddle up!   It’s a lot of fun!
