I Was Floored… John Assaraf “Outed” Me Today!

I am feeling so blessed right now…

Something happened this evening that I didn’t expect for at least a couple of months, probably longer.

This afternoon I had about a 20-minute phone conversation with John Assaraf and Mariana, one of his staff members. We discussed a way forward together that includes writing copy for his newest company, PraxisNow (The Neuroscience of Maximum Achievement).

That was exciting enough,  but it turned out to be just the beginning.

As the conversation ended, John invited me to listen in on a live webinar that he would be hosting just 45 minutes or so later. He expected around 450 business owners to attend. Of course, I said YES!

At 5 p.m. the webinar got underway. The information presented was terrific. John–as most of you probably know–is a great speaker in addition to being a terrific business and life coach, so the time flew by. I scribbled notes like crazy because what he was sharing with this large group of business owners was proprietary info and wouldn’t be repeated or disseminated in written form.

But what floored me was that, as some point, out of the blue, John introduced me as a “great copywriter” and then as his copywriter– despite the fact that I haven’t written a single word for him yet!

Oh, as you already know, he’s seen the copy I wrote for two clients of his and the copy I wrote for a mutual client (Marco Henry) before I was aware that Marco had attended one of John’s mastermind groups, and John told me in emails I did a “great” job for all of them, but I figured that was just between him and me (and you, my blog readers, FB friends and family members)–nothing that I could broadcast to Timbuktu and Antares.

And then he pulls this!

I must confess: I teared up! I was floored, delighted, thrilled, and completely flabbergasted.

It put me in mind of the many times DeForest Kelley “outed” me in public (at Star Trek conventions) as a writer whose career he had launched and, later, as “Krazy Kris”.

I’m not used to stuff like this. I may never get used to stuff like this!

I can’t lie: it felt good but it also set the bar awfully high! When high-profile folks start claiming you as ‘theirs’, it’s a bit of a shock!

It’s a wake up call.  (Cue the Sally Field Oscar acceptance speech: “You like me. You really like me!”)

Gawrsh…  (Remember Carolyn Kelley’s retort the time she and De and Mom and Dad were saying a number of nice things about me all at once and I got embarrassed and told them to knock it off? “Just stick your toe in the rug and take it, like a good little celebrity.” HA HA HA HA HA.)

Shee-yit!

When I was a kid (as early as 5th grade) and teachers would read my Roy Rogers and Dale Evans stories to the class, I would want to melt and run underneath my shoes or head for the hallway. It was agonizing to have a spotlight on me.   I didn’t want notoriety; I wanted to blend in, not stand out!

In my opinion, one of the truest statements ever written was this one: “Writing is show business for shy people.”

Anyway…I’m feeling humbled, blessed, anointed, and burdened tonight by John’s introduction.  He put my name next to his tonight. That’s an endorsement.

As an old hippie friend of mine would say, “That’s heavy, man…”

I just hope I can live up to his proclamation every time I go to bat for him–and for you, and for anyone I write for ever again!

No pressure, right?
